Selection of Artist of the Month
Program: Jimmy Cox (pending)
Jimmy Don Cox is a cowboy, fine artist, singer/musician, Viet-Nam Veteran as a U.S. Navy Gunner’s Mate, airplane pilot, actor, poet, former deputy sheriff... sort of makes one wonder if Jimmy Don Cox has yet to figure out what he wants to be when he grows up, doesn’t it? Well, he knows exactly what he wants to do, and he’s doing it!
Jimmy was born on the Upton ranch South of Christoval, Texas. After serving as a U.S. Navy Gunner’s Mate in the Viet-Nam war, he became a Deputy Sheriff for Tom Green County. In late 1978, he met Max Hulse who recognized Jimmy’s unique artistic capability. Finally, in 1979 Jimmy Don was able to leave the Sheriff’s Office and go full-time as a Fine Artist. He learned sculpture from a good friend, Grant Speed, CA (Member of the Cowboy Artists of America, or CAA.). Other artists that taught him include Fritz White, CA, Howard Terpning, CA, James Reynolds, CA, Jon Zahourek (Anatomist), Bob Tommey (Former color consultant for Grumbacher) and the late James Boren, CA. Two bronzes, “I Coulda Been a Lawyer” and “Good Mornin’ Darlin’” were the number one top sellers at the 1987 NAWA show (National Academy of Western Art) at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. Many prestigious galleries have shown and sold his work to Collectors world-wide.
His oil paintings, signed prints and bronzes have been collected by such notable people as O.A.”Bum” Phillips, Ken “Festus” Curtis, Ben Johnson, Bruce Boxleitner and the list goes on.
In the late 1980’s, Jimmy Don was discovered by Hollywood and he added another medium to his list of talents. Having done live appearances as a singer/musician, he began appearing as an Actor in Movies and Television. Some of his acting credits include “TheYoung Riders”, “Gunsmoke”, “Return to Tombstone”, “The Good Ol’ Boys” and several commercials.

DUES…If you have not paid your dues by now they are over due. I am in the process of typing the 2009/2010 Yearbook and do not want to leave anyone out that wishes to renew their membership. Please make your payments in the next few days and let me know your intentions so I can include your name. Also please let me know if there are any changes in your address etc.
I hope to have the yearbook printed before the 19th (I have a $20 coupon to be used before that date). Saving money for the club should be on everyone’s mind … our end of year profit & loss statement showed a $926.12 deficit.
Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?

JOYCE ANN IRVIN was voted in Monday night to fill the 2ND VICE-PRESIDENT vacancy. She will be the new membership
chairperson for the 2009 / 2010 year for SAAC.
JO GIBSON, retired police chief, gave a wonderful program Monday night. About 30 SAAC members and guest enjoyed seeing his display of knives that he had made and knives he has collected. He told very interesting stories about the history of knives. Thanks to Mary Kollmyer & Randi Buche for the delicious refreshments.
Sympathy is extended to Jo Anne Chandler and her family. Harold Chandler passed away in August – he was always a great supporter of the San Angelo Art Club. He will be greatly missed.
Get well wishes to Lou Ella Teague – she hasn’t been feeling well for over a week. To “me” also - I had eye surgery for a detached retina on the 3rd of this month. My eye sight should return to normal in about a month from surgery.
